About

Elsa Lama von Buchwald is an Ecuadorean multidisciplinary artist based in New York City. 

Her work is conformed by depictions of power and the different relationships in which it presents itself. She takes the power struggles present in her upbringing in Ecuador in comparison with her life in the United States as a reference for the metaphors and analogies in her work. She earned a BA in Arts in Context at Eugene Lang College the New School for Liberal Arts in 2015 and a BFA in Fine Arts at Parsons the New School for Design the same year. She is currently graduating with an MFA in Visual Arts at Columbia University. Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions in both New York City in 2016, and Ecuador in 2017, as well as multiple group shows in institutions like the IPCNY in New York City.

LIKE CRABS IN A BUCKET

Passionate Interactions

Two channel installation, depicting crabs interacting in a displaced scenario. Combination of a group effort and betrayal. These videos emphasize the complexities and ambiguity of human interactions through the anthropomorphization of these crabs.

The Pope's Message, Como Camino Jesus

The work depicts a claymation animation tracing the hands of Pope Francis while giving a speech to the youth and subtitles with different English translations. The video plays on a loop.

Speech

Hand-drawn animation of the hand of a populist politician delivering a speech. Stereo sound plays from the front and the back of the room. The front plays an unrecognizable politicians voice and the back plays the cheering sound.
